All-terrain vehicles (ATV) are becoming popular in the vehicle industry nowadays. In fact, more models with various styles and designs are available in the market. Some popular manufacturers include Honda, Yamaha, and Kawasaki.

The all-terrain vehicle (ATV) was initially developed in Japan to help farmers transport goods and products from farm to town in isolated, mountainous areas. This vehicle was especially helpful during the spring, winter, and rainy seasons as the roads proved to be often impassable with conventional vehicles. Japanese innovators and inventors observed these four-wheelers were better mode of travel and soon became a recreational vehicle, providing transportation to areas inaccessible by other motorized transport.

A group of Japanese engineers worked on a vehicle that could sell during the winter season. Honda engineer Osamu Takeuchi and his team already started to work on recreational vehicles at this time but they were not deployed to production. The project fell to their team and they developed the first all-terrain vehicle called US90.

Honda introduced the three-wheeled US90 with a 7hp engine to America in 1970. Yamaha followed and developed its first ATV, the YT125. In 1980s, quad bikes or four-wheeled ATV's were developed by Yamaha and Honda. Suzuki introduced the first high-performance, two-stroke four-wheeler, the QuadRacer LT250. Polaris Industries becomes the first North American company to enter the ATV business, introducing snowmobile technology such as automatic transmissions to replace manual gearboxes and floorboards rather than footpegs. Kawasaki offers its first four-wheeled ATV.

In 1998, ATV manufacturers stopped selling three-wheeled ATV due to safety standards and regulations released by the US Government. Fast forward to 1990s to early 2000s, high-performance ATV models returned to showroom floors with all-new premium 4-stroke models from virtually every ATV manufacturer.

All-terrain vehicle continues to develop high-performance and powerful quad bikes with unique and functional designs. Some of these include the Yamaha Raptor ATVs such as the Yamaha Raptor 250R, ThunderCat 1000, and the Outlander.

All Terrain Vehicles run on low pressure tires, has a seat for one person and has handlebars for steering the vehicle. These vehicles, as evidenced by their name, are used for off-road adventures through the muck, the mud and the earthy terrain. All Terrain Vehicles are used in many different ways including for sport or fun and for safety purposes.

All Terrain Vehicles are not street legal in the United States, which means that they cannot be driven on any roadways that regular motor vehicles travel on. All Terrain Vehicles can be driven on dirt roadways, through the woods, and anywhere off-road that does not employ trespassing.

The first model of an ATV was manufactured in the 1960s but they weren't as advanced and safe as they were in the 1980s and now. The first All Terrain Vehicle was released to the public in 1982 by Suzuki. It was the QuadRunner LT125 and it was specially made for beginning drivers. This was the first four wheel model released to the public. There have been three wheel models that were manufactured by Honda in the 1970s and these models were used in the James Bond film, Diamonds Are Forever. Television shows such as Magnum PI and Hart 2 Hart also used three wheel All Terrain Vehicles.

That first three wheel model from Honda was called the ATC90 and was manufactured for the sole purpose of recreational activity. All Terrain Vehicles are also massed produced for racing purposes. There are official ATV races held not only across the country but also worldwide. ATVs, because there is no protection from the elements, are also a huge safety concern. There are no roll bars on the vehicle and no surrounding steel like a car has to protect its passengers or riders. ATVs, if not operated properly, can roll over and crush the limbs or the entire body of the driver.

Other concerns about ATV use is trespassing (mentioned earlier), the destruction of environmental life, erosion of land and noise/dust pollution. A 2004 study determined that 767 people died in the United States because of injuries sustained from an All Terrain Vehicle accident. The Consumer Product Safety Commission released data in The New York Times in 2007 saying that 44,000 children under the age of 16 were injured in ATV accidents in the year of 2004 and of those 44,000 injured, 150 of them were killed.

Aside from entertainment use or use for sport, All Terrain Vehicles are also used by municipalities for safety and security reasons. Police departments across the country use ATVs to patrol large crowds and gain access to areas not suitable for large vehicles. ATVs are also used by lifeguarding outfits, beach patrol outfits and the Coast Guard across the country. The ATVs are used to patrol the beach by lifeguards and even police officers to make sure that the crowds are obeying the law and are used to get to certain beaches in a moment's notice in the event of an emergency.

The major manufacturers of All Terrain Vehicles are Arctic Cat, Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Polaris Industries, Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Bombardier Recreational Products.

Some people have the luxury of being able to afford a brand new ATV. Not all of us have the cash or the credit to expend on such a purchase. If you are considering buying a used ATV, there are a few things you should be sure to check out. Even if it is used, you still want to make sure you are buying a safe and sound running ATV.

By carefully checking over any used vehicle, whether an ATV or a car, you can often make an extremely good purchase by buying used. Your first option is to take it to a qualified mechanic. This is very important when buying from an individual owner and not a dealership. Try to find a mechanic who specializes in the type of vehicle you are considering purchasing. Having a mechanic go over the ATV can put you out of pocket anywhere from 0 and up. If you don't want to spend any money up front, here are some things you should look for when giving the prospective ATV the once over.

Look carefully at the plastic fenders and check for any cracks or breaks in the plastic. If they are broken or cracked, they will need to be replaced. Replacement fenders for any ATV are very expensive. The condition of the plastic will also give you a good idea about how the ATV was treated, rough or well cared for.

Check the headlights to make sure they turn on and work well. Make certain that the lens covers are intact with no cracks, chips or breaks. Look at the seat and make sure it isn't worn out or ripped. One again, any replacement parts aren't going to be cheap.

Check the undercarriage. You may have to get some help to get the front end onto jack stands or a lift to do this. Look closely at the frame, looking for any cracks or dents in the framework. Also look for rust. As you can imagine, heavy rust is not a good sign.

Check the bike for play in the wheels. Play in the wheels can be a bad sign, indicating wheel bearings or ball joints that need replacing. Also check for play in the handlebars and steering column. Be sure to go over the tires and wheels, looking for plugs or bent rims. Make sure the bike still has good tire rubber. If it doesn't, the tires will be needing replacing soon which can be very costly.

Look at the rubber grips on the handlebars and make sure they aren't dry rotted or torn. It may seem like a small thing, but you might be shocked at what replacement handlebar grips cost for an ATV. I got lucky and found a set of quality bicycle grips that fit on my ATV handlebars perfectly. It was a savings of for me, so don't laugh.

Be sure to pull out the dipstick and have a look at the oil. It should be clean and not thick like sludge. If it's thick and nasty, you are probably going to buy yourself a heap of motor problems. Check that the air filter and air box aren't full of dirt and dust. If the air filter hasn't been changed regularly, the bike may have gotten excessive dirt into the air chamber.

You can get a good deal on a used ATV that will serve you well, if you use caution and common sense when making a decision on which bike to buy. Just check out everything you possibly can, or even better, have a mechanic look at the bike as I suggested at the beginning.
